Abstract:

Purpose: This study aims to reveal the opinions of students who study Classical Western Music, about music performance anxiety (MPA), their experiences and educational expectations and requests on this subject.

Method: This is a phenomenological and qualitative study. Phenomenological studies aim to reveal individuals’ viewpoints on a phenomenon, and the meanings they attribute to it. A total of 23 State Conservatory students in preparatory, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade (23 total, 15 females, 8 males) was included in the study. In the study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data obtained under the study were analyzed by content analysis method. The obtained results were analyzed by theme and categories and evaluated and interpreted in the light of literature.

Findings: The study results showed that the main causative factors of music performance anxiety included jury’s negative evaluation, jury’s attitudes and behaviors, manifestations of performance anxiety such as trembling and muscle contraction, get distracted, that the main coping strategy among the participants was positive self-talk and that their educational expectation was the inclusion of an anxiety management course in the curriculum. As a remarkable result of the study, the conservatory students stated that they have needed a course, counseling, activities, etc. on music performance anxiety in the curriculum.

Implications for Research and Practice: Given the study results, it was observed that MPA is quite common among students, but they do not have detailed and literature-based knowledge on this issue.   Considering the fact that performing is an integral part of musical education-training, including courses and activities on coping with musical performance anxiety should be take part in the license education-training curriculum in all institutions providing conservatory and musical education in Turkey.
