Enhancing Fishery Production Safety Management Through AIS Technology Integration: A Biotechnological and Commercial Perspective

Abstract:

Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) enhance maritime safety by facilitating data exchange between vessels and shore-based stations. Our survey, involving 55 participants from fishery management and the fishing community, examined the use and perceptions of plug-in AIS technology. While AIS usage is common, with many valuing its role in collision avoidance, opinions on its reliability and data interpretation varied. The survey indicated a moderate awareness of plug-in AIS, with many participants open to adopting this technology, highlighting its potential for broader application. Perceived benefits include enhanced communication, better monitoring, and improved safety at sea, particularly through real-time vessel tracking for regulatory compliance and effective emergency responses. However, challenges such as the high initial cost, maintenance demands, and the need for technical expertise for installation and troubleshooting were noted as barriers. Data security concerns also emerged as significant. Addressing these issues through training, subsidies, and robust security measures could facilitate wider adoption of plug-in AIS in the fisheries sector, aligning with commercial biotechnology goals to improve industry practices and safety protocols.
