Abstract:

Traditional oil painting material research overly focuses on short-term artistic effects, while neglecting the long-term environmental impact and durability of materials. This article applied biodegradable materials in oil painting creation to achieve a balance between environment and art. Firstly, this article used life cycle assessment to examine the environmental impacts of different materials, including carbon footprint and biodegradation rate. It then conducted water resistance, adhesion, and color stability tests on the selected polyhydroxyalkanoates. This article combined the selected biodegradable materials and traditional oil painting pigment components to prepare a new type of oil painting pigment. Suspension polymerization was used to ensure uniform dispersion and no aggregation of the pigment. Finally, this article used ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and laser diffraction particle size analysis (LDPSA) to ensure color consistency and particle size uniformity. The evaluation results show that the overall satisfaction of the new biodegradable oil painting pigment in artist experience feedback was 2.4% higher than that of traditional materials. In the production and refining stages of raw materials, the new biodegradable oil painting pigments had values of 337 L, 0.32 kg, 56 kg, 848967 J, 33 µg/m³, and 5 mg/kg in terms of water resource consumption, ecological toxicity, solid waste generation, energy footprint, air quality impact, and soil pollution, respectively. The new materials used not only achieve excellent artistic standards but also have high environmental friendliness.
