Abstract:

We present a machine vision-based nondestructive inspection (NDE) method for welding defects of metal materials. This technique is based on measuring the depth of welding defects and analyzing the image to find the most suitable point for laser cutting or laser drilling, which helps to reduce or eliminate the need for destructive testing. In this study, we use a low-cost 3D printed scanner connected to an SLR camera and software to examine welds in metal materials before any damage occurs at welds for strength assessment. The proposed inspection technique also helps identify areas that may need further post processing or other procedures in order to improve their quality.
